We would like to acknowledge the Wakka Wakka people who are the Traditional Custodians of this land upon which Saint Mary's Catholic College is built. We would like to pay respect to Elders both past and present of the Wakka Wakka people and extend that respect to other Aboriginal people present in our community.
Saint Mary's is proud of its long history of educating Indigenous students and working alongside the Elders and families
from Cherbourg and surrounding Wakka Wakka communities. Continuing this strong connection to Cherbourg is important to Saint Mary's Catholic College. Our mission is to provide a rich cultural learning environment for all at the College. We have high expectations to achieve successful outcomes for each Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander student.
At our College we have a Cultural Liaison Officer whose role is to support Indigenous students and families academically, pastorally and culturally. Our (CLO) works closely with the College Leadership Team, the Pastoral Team and the whole teaching staff to achieve the best pastoral outcomes for our Indigenous students. Establishing and maintaining strong relationships with students, their families and the community is a priority for our College.
At Saint Mary's we have established a Bunya Dreaming Garden which highlights our continued fostering of culture by paying homage to the Wakka Wakka people. It is a sacred space that has local native plants throughout, a unique mural and a large cross both designed painted by the College's in-house local artist Niketa Law which is her interpretation of our surroundings here on Wakka Wakka country.
